For the less global, more local update: Had an Americanist Society party / gripe session last night. One of our members provided a home-cooked Korean meal, with a huge number of dishes, for us. I couldn't believe how many things she managed to cook at once; it was practically Thanksgiving-dinner scale. It was very good, and we had German chocolate cake (provided by "Canada Dry," to give her rapper name) for dessert. I could barely move. We watched M. Butterfly, the film version with Jeremy Irons, in preparation for a brown bag lecture we're having next Tuesday. After that, we griped for nearly three hours about how neglected we are in comparison to the Brit Lit contingent. I got back here after 1 AM, I believe, and slept in my clothes. That's way past my bedtime these days. And I couldn't get warm, which was part of the reason I stayed in my clothes (and added a sweatshirt).
So I'm pitiful. I'm reading Sontag at the moment and waiting until noon, so I can heat up the leftovers that my host sent home with me. Yummm.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
