Still philosophizing after all these years.

The Onion is rerunning this article this week. We'll have to file this one in the sad but true category. I don't think they get any points for predicting the war; this one you could see coming a mile away. And you know, all along, I've said that there was something more to this than oil this time (though oil is undeniably a major motive). Silly me: we're going to be imperialists! How could I not have guessed? The sun never sets on the American empire! Pardon me while I puke. And defect to Canada.
In less grouchy news: Jake, everyone's favorite babysittee, is purring away in my lap. He's being unusually clingy, even for him. Separation anxiety, perhaps? Or hoping that if he's endearing enough, I'll change my mind about keeping him on his diet?
And in food news: Another new addiction is blue corn tortillia chips, with roasted red pepper hummus. In my ongoing attempts to eat healthier foods, I made my first excursion out to Wild Oats Market yesterday. The prices were better than I expected, and they had big selections of some of my favorite brands, like Near East and Annie's. I'll definitely be making trips out there to stock up on stuff like that. They also had a wonderful selection of fruit. At the instigation of Ditto, and because of my own guilty conscience, I've been trying to eat more fresh fruits.
As most of you know via e-mail, my mom is in the hospital with a broken ankle (now featuring plates and screws) after a collision with a 64-year-old drunk driver who was going the wrong way on the interstate. He was on his way back from getting groceries. My buddy Holmes summed up the situation best (from an e-mail):
I had almost ceased to be amazed at the stupidity of people, and then a sexagenarian drunkard goes out at 10:00 in the morning to buy Post Toasties while intoxicated. Unbelievable.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
