De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
We're reading poems by Brenda Marie Osbey today for class; they're concerned with New Orleans, past and present. To prep myself throughly, I've listened to "City of New Orleans" and "House of the Rising Sun." Who needs to read the primary texts, anyway? [note: actually, she's a very good poet; I'm just unusually cynical, even by my standards]
Speaking of the deeply intellectual experience that is grad school: for postcolonial last week, we were reading Jean Rhys. I was examining the doodles of the person next to me (have I mentioned that I detest that class?) and noticed the way he'd headed his notes: Wide SargASSo Sea.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
