My kiddies are having their first pop quiz tomorrow. They'll probably kill me, because it's not about literature. They're supposed to be using the Bedford Handbook, but I know that a number of them haven't even purchased it. I've begged them enough times, so it's quiz time now. I also gave them a handout from a writing book (except mine is the 8th edition, making it two full editions out of date) on compare and contrast writing, and that's on the quiz, too. We're doing a thesis workshop tomorrow, and then we're watching the film version of Goodbye, Columbus Wednesday and Friday, since they have a paper draft due this week. A colleague pointed out at Friday's party that the film is only going to reinforce the notion that none of the book's characters are Jewish (on the first day of discussion, the students revealed that they didn't realize the characters were Jewish). I might have shown The Graduate instead, if I'd thought that through. Of course, I don't see how I could have possibly anticipated that they'd miss such an obvious point in the text. Siiiigh. Sheltered WASP rich kids, what you gonna do?
Alice often stalks my printer as it prints things out, and she was doing that earlier in the evening, as I printed out my teaching materials tonight (and of course I'm looking forward to that nice early hike to the nearest free copy machine tomorrow morning). I also saved some documents to a floppy, and she went over and put her nose within a half-inch of the computer box to get a good listen. I was concerned that she might lunge at the computer, but she refrained. Whatta cutie. She just finished beating the living daylights out of her yellow possum toy (technically a mouse, but that's not what it looks like), which she branded as Unspeakably Evil from the first day she had it, for reasons known only to her. I don't claim to follow feline thought patterns.
That's about it for excitement around here. Somebody stop meeeeee.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
