Hullo, all. *waves weakly from slumped position on futon, which is developing distinct butt-shaped sags*
Crunch time is here, not aided by the last-minute flurry of activities. The 19th cen guy is having us to dinner tonight at 7:00, which is not particularly helpful for those of us with 20-page "publishable quality" papers due Friday (ah, but WHEN Friday? crossing my fingers that that means by midnight . . .). There are three of us who are going to have that problem, one of whom didn't know until yesterday that the paper is due Friday (or that it had originally been due tomorrow; she's a bit vague). My topic for this one very much involves my research passion / prospective dissertation topic, so I'm having my usual problem of reigning myself in with research. My desk chair is in a circle of books, articles, legal pads, and file folders; it looks like something exploded (me?).
Because he hasn't gotten our drafts of the 19th cen paper back yet, he's moved the due date from Monday to Wednesday. I'm still going to try to get it in Monday, as my modernism paper, which is going to require more bleeping research, is due Thursday. Erk. With any luck, I'll be out of here Friday morning, earlyish.
Last night was modernism films night, featuring Hitchcock's two WWII propaganda films, Bon Voyage and Aventure Malgache, and Citizen Kane. That's entirely too much to take in at once, just for the record. Anyway, we called it the "Citizen Kane Slumber Party" and snacked throughout on the variety of odds-and-ends of holiday foods that had found their way into the seminar room. It nearly did turn into a slumber party when it momentarily appeared that we were locked in the English building. At that point, I could have slept blissfully on a nice warm copy machine with no problems, I was so tired.
Back to Faulkner.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
