"Rationalism is always monistic. It starts from wholes and universals, and makes much of the unity of things. Empiricism starts from the parts, and makes of the whole a collection . . . the rationalist will usually also be in favor of what is called free-will, and the empiricist will be a fatalist [determinist] . . . the rationalist finally will be of dogmatic temper in his affirmations [definitions], while the empiricist may be more sceptical and open to dicussion."

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
