Murphy's Law Redux
Snap, pop, smoke, ozone: my computer's power source blew out. Of course.
I was trying to type up some exercises for my students and got as far as typing the handout's title (it's a gripping one, too: "Characteristics of A Strong Thesis Statement") when the loud snap signaled the end of desktop computing. This is the second time this has happened to me, which seems improbable. The first time was in my sophomore year of college, midway through a research paper. This time was less traumatic but equally annoying.
I've since schlepped my printer downstairs and hooked it up to my laptop. I hate doing schoolwork on this computer; I prefer to reserve the desktop as the work station and this as the general computing area, but that's clearly gonna have to change until I get the other computer fixed.
That's really the most exciting thing going on in my little world. I finished a Richard Wright novel tonight and am consequently tremendously depressed. McTeague is up next, and I don't expect that to brighten my mood. Unfortunately, there really aren't any happy books on my comprehensive exam reading list.
Off to check on how the office is airing out; that ozone is killer.
Reading: thesis writing tips
Listening: What Not to Wear marathon
Current Obsession: chronic bad luck
Alice: has been huffing ozone

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
