Fright Night

Yesterday's teaching workshop was not as horrifically interminable as the previous post probably implies, but it wore me out mentally. There was a get-together for the department and the new students last night, but I didn't go. I just didn't feel social enough, plus my sinuses were bothering me, giving that achy-loopy sensation to my head.

So I went to Blockbuster and rented a slew of horror movies: Poltergeist, Carrie, The Amityville Horror, The Shining.

When I rented them, the employee struck up a conversation about how these were horror classics and much better than the junk released today. I affirmed that, and we kept talking about them (has anyone else ever noticed that movie store employees are almost always chatty?). He asked if I was going to watch them by myself and was horrified when I said yes.

But of course! That's the only way to watch scary movies: alone and in the dark. There should be no one else to distract you from getting completely sucked into the film's story, and keeping all the lights in the apartment out just adds to the ambiance. I love watching movies alone in the dark. That probably puts me in some special introverted loser category, but whatever.

So I watched the first three in my above list last night. I'd never seen Carrie before, and I'd just like to announce that I need to be telekinetic. It would make my teaching style all the more, ah, unique

I used to try to move objects when I was young. In classes, I'd put a pencil on my desk and strain to make it move. I can still see the hard beige tops of the desks in my mind. Lord only knows how many class hours I wasted on attempting that-- sadly, with no results.

Reading: Patricia Cornwell. Again.
Listening: distant traffic, fridge noises, not much else
Current Obsession: movies!
Alice: was right next to me but has since disappeared.
