Still philosophizing after all these years.

Here's an interesting conversation I had with my new next-door neighbor last week. This was right after the flooding, and I had shut Alice up in the front room of my apartment; she was pacing back and forth in the window, tail out horizontally.
Neighbor: She's such a beautiful cat! We've seen her in your front window so many times. She's mad at you now, though.
Me: Yeah, she's pretty hyper. Is that your cat? [kitten is running around madly in the front downstairs room of her apartment]
Neighbor: Yes [proceeds to tell long story of how she got the cat] So, what's your cat's name?
Me: Alice.
Neighbor: That's a funny name for a cat.
Me: Well, what's your cat's name?
Neighbor: Fenster.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
