Still philosophizing after all these years.

Late-late-late Sunday night / Monday morning, I was grading papers, while listening to Nebraska. Later, for reasons unknown, I broke into a spontaneous chorus of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." I had gotten as far as "I was standin' by my windoooow, on one cold and cloud-dee daaaaay, when I saw the hearse . . . " when Alice yowled at me. I tell myself that she prefers happy songs (I've previously been called down for my rendition of "Desperado"). It's not a commentary on my singing. Really. I'm sure.
At any rate, I think it's interesting that student papers cause me to listen to bleak Springsteen albums and sing songs about funerals and death.
As the sun started to rise, I broke into "Here Comes the Sun" (Nick Cave-style) but ended it with a laugh that struck even me as somewhat unbalanced. I think I need to sleep more.
Papers graded, I then hauled off to teach a semi-coherent class. I think I freaked the students out more than usual. THEN, to top it all off, one of them came to my office-- and found me standing on my desk. I was trying to reattach a poster to the wall, which I explained to her, but she seemed alarmed nonetheless. These kids have a narrow definition of what constitutes "normal" behavior.
It's a good thing none of them came by after that, because I'd moved from standing on the desk to sleeping on it, stack of file folders for pillow and jacket for blanket. Good thing it's a big desk.
Which brings us to today. And oh, what joys will it no doubt bring!
As we 80s children say: not.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
