Alice story: Alice is fond of crawling around my bookcases and has even been known to get behind the rows of books to sleep. A few days ago, she rummaged around on the lowest shelf of my philosophy / theory bookcase. She then crawled behind the books (the shelves are deep, and the books aren't pushed all the way back) and eventually pushed out Marshall Berman's All That Is Solid Melts into Air. She was clearly expressing solidarity with my musings on modernity (see my 9/30/2003 post). She's a brilliant cat. Aww. Pwecious.
She's so sweet right now, lying in the windowsill, looking out into the night. Aww. Awww. Awwww.
I made the newbie mistake of saving my worst student papers to grade last. Wanna talk about depression? Yikes. I just gave one a D, and it was a generous D, one that may become a D-. The student didn't do much with my lengthy comments on the draft, and that annoys me. I mean, it annoys me especially. As in more than my usual levels of constant annoyance.
Kvetch, kvetch.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
