Okay.
In theory, TV is my escape. My mental release. That which as absolutely nothing to do with graduate study.
Until Criminal Intent started tonight. It concerns an American studies graduate program. And features the world's most obvious Cornell West character, rap CD (which the character points out, a la West, is not in fact rap), theats to leave the program, and all. He's even got the Afro and looks a good deal like West overall. I should know; I've seen The Man myself.
It also includes a graduate student who's been working on his dissertation for 10 years. Oh, dear. That's my future, folks. His dissertation is about the influence of Eliot and Pound on contemporary pop culture, entitled "Fighting in the Captain's Tower." Ironically, or frighteningly, I've been threatening to write that paper myself (at least I was kidding, mostly). Dude, I just love that song. Madame Elvisette forsees what music will be annoying her neighbors in the near future. Time to go grab Highway 61 Revisited off the ol' CD rack (of CDs organized chronologically by artist. Sometimes, it's good to be OCD).
I considered just turning the TV off, until a fellow student called me to make sure that I was watching. So I decided to keep watching. Besides, I have to have that Vincent D'Onofrio fix. Yeah, I'm pathetic. Have I driven that point home enough?

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
