Hmm . . . been a few days since that last update. Whoops.

I'm feeling slothful and am tempted to throw graduate school over in favor of waiting tables somewhere with a warmer climate. Maybe it's the weather, but I'm bummed.

And I don't feel like working. I did just finish Mrs. Dalloway, which doesn't really count as work, per se. I love every word produced by Virginia Woolf, but I don't understand her at all. She's far over my head. I've been in Woolf-overdrive these past few months; we read The Voyage Out and Between the Acts (her first and last novels) last term, and then there was The Hours. I hadn't read this one in a few years, so it was quite a treat. I'm having some trouble getting myself worked up about Coleridge's lectures, though. And I do like Coleridge.

Let's see. Finished another scarf this weekend, got a skein of yarn for another one. Right now, I'm determined to master the fine art of making granny squares.

I cat-sat His Royal Obesity, Jake, this weekend; his mommy picked him up this morning. He behaved better than he did over Thanksgiving; I think I may have gotten my point (bad behavior doesn't get you what you want) across. He did wake me up at 4:30 this morning, but I just inserted an earplug, turned on my side, and went back to sleep. A drunken-sounding chick in the open parking garage was screaming hysterically (but happily) at about 2:30 AM (imagine the acoustics), which also woke me up. I used to be such a sound sleeper; what happened?

If the weather radar is to be believed, snow is heading this way soon. The sky already has that leaden look to it, which I think is really beautiful, like everything is about to come crashing down in the trees. I always picture it lingering in gardens.

I'm trying my durndest to waste time here. Let's see. Went to Target (which is much closer than Wal-Mart) and finally got a slipcover for my armchair. I have a brick-red kilim style rug with some yellow, cream, and blue, the black futon, a red bench, and everything else is wood or black. The chair is beige-ish with a pale pink, green, yellow, and blue design. The colors are so muted that it didn't clash wildly with the rest of the apartment, but it didn't look great either. It kind of blended in with the wall it's against, more or less. But slipcovers were on mega-clearance sale at Target, and I got a red twill one (for much cheaper than the one on the website, incidentally) for the chair. The chair has a T-cushion, and it's nearly impossible to find slipcovers that fit those (if you're buying a chair, be warned). This doesn't fit perfectly and will never look quite smooth, but it's a vast improvement. I also got a red-and-cream striped pillow, which looks quite nice. The chair also stands out from the wall now, so you notice the tile on the fireplace that's behind it. [note how excited I am. note how pathetic my life is]

I've volunteered to let a prospective crash at my place (which makes it sound so wild, so exciting) during recruitment in March. Perhaps I should have issued a warning about the futon s/he'll be sleeping on. As long as you don't mind bars poking your back and butt, it's just fine. If that's an issue, the floor might be more comfy.

Oh, and I got a little bonsai at Target. It's supposedly an outdoor bonsai, but they were indoors at Target, so it's going to try out indoor living first. There needs to be something alive besides me (and that's often debatable) in this apartment.

I'm quite the weatherwoman; it's snowing. On that note . . .
