Owing to severe eyestrain (gee, reading 12-14 hours a day causes eyestrain?), I have, with the advice of my eye doctor, gotten +1.25 reading glasses. CVS's selection was perhaps less than fashionable, not that I've ever had fashionable glasses. I do like the shape of the ones I got, though they're kind of big for my face. The frame color reminds me of either my second or third pair of glasses way back when. The $16 price tag (most others were $24) was what ultimately swung the vote in their favor, though, frame shape and color aside. The magnification is supposed to make me strain less when I read and thus prevent the slow-to-refocus problem I was having every time I looked up to take a breath (things were swimming madly and refusing to focus; and here I thought that an excess of Victorian lit was at fault).
Though the glasses, in their limited trial period tonight (tackling Ford Madox Ford, The Good Soldier), do seem to have helped, my severe brain strain remains unaffected.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
