Ok, I am completely ripping this link from the WHoB (linked in the Faint of Heart section; you have been warned, and I am not responsible), but I absolutely must post this here. It's a "review" of A Beautiful Mind, a movie (I refuse to call it a "film") that apparently everyone in the known universe but myself adored. "Everyone" may be an exaggeration (a slight one); when I was visiting UIUC, one of the students there asked me what I thought of it. I scrambled and stammered momentarily, having discovered that people do not take well to derogatory remarks about this film (I mean, MOVIE); she, however, stepped in and assessed it as "hokey," thus eliciting a sigh of relief (and some candid remarks) from me.
Which reminds me of another good film story, this one concerning now-hitched fellow undergraduate Jill B. (yeah, you know who I'm talking about). When we were discussing gender identities in literary theory, we watched Boys Don't Cry. Jill walked out during the movie, actually fairly early on (and definitely before the murder scene; I didn't notice exactly when she left). After walking out on this film adaptation of the real-life brutal murder of transgender Brandon Teena (brief plot summary for those who haven't seen it), she went to the professor and demanded that he apologize for showing the film. He became irate (gee, ya think?) and finally told her that he did not murder Brandon Teena and thus had absolutely nothing to apologize for. She didn't speak to him for the rest of the term.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
