Philosophy Slam
Still philosophizing after all these years.
Monday, May 06, 2002
Ok, since I've been threatened about updating . . . Today's highlight was definitely the philosophy picnic (use your imagination). Free food is always a priority for me, but I also had a good long talk with a fellow English-philosophy major (who pointed out that this would be a much better place, if it were not for the people who attend it). Also worked the word "cesspool" into (a later) casual conversation.
Hit the library booksale today, for the second day in a row (since new books find their way out every day). Picked up one today, four yesterday. Don't know when I plan to read these, but I'm an American-- I just like to possess. If anyone out there likes Balzac, they seem to have dumped their entire collection.
Got to read my favorite passage from The Crossing for English. We also read Job and a highly heretical critical piece on said Biblical text. Should provoke a riot tomorrow; needless to say, I await it with bated breath. And if it's not forthcoming, I'll start it.

Pascal: The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.
